【报告摘要】

Behavioral studies consistently document the “pull-to-center” (PTC) bias, whereby orders gravitate toward the mean of demand rather than the optimal quantity. While extensively examined in single-decision settings with exogenous prices, little is known about its persistence when firms jointly determine price and quantity, where demand is endogenously shaped by pricing decisions. This paper addresses a fundamental question: does the PTC bias emerge in joint decision environments? We develop a theoretical joint price–quantity newsvendor model that identifies three distinct optimal strategies and design a laboratory experiment spanning multiple cost and probability treatments. Our experimental results reveal systematic deviations from the theoretical optima, with persistent pricing and stocking biases across treatments. We extend the PTC definition to joint settings, showing it arises when the sum of price and quantity gravitates toward an interior point between potential market values, thus capturing endogenous demand effects. Surprisingly, we uncover a bias shifting phenomenon, wherein the manifestation of PTC moves from stocking to pricing as unit ordering costs or market-potential probabilities increase. To explain these patterns, we introduce the concept of an endogenized anchor, whereby decision makers collapse uncertain market potentials into a certainty-equivalent expectation and adjust around a self-generated, optimized center. Structural estimation confirms its superior explanatory power relative to models with exogenous anchors. Our findings advance the study of the PTC effect in behavioral operations and carry both theoretical and practical implications for joint decisions under uncertainty. 

【报告人简介】 谯涌川，东北财经大学高等经济研究院副教授，四川省“天府峨眉计划”青年科技人才，博士毕业于新加坡国立大学。他的研究重点涵盖博弈论、信息设计、网络经济学以及运营管理等领域，在经济学国际期刊Journal of Economic Theory发表论文两篇，另有两篇分别在Games and Economic Behavior和Economic Theory期刊返修中，主持1项国家自然科学基金青年项目。
